Sarah: Goodbye, savings.

It's 2:30 am and instead of sleeping, I am researching new Urban Outfitters locations.

And, um. I'm excited.

So I would just like to point out that Boise, ID got an Urban Outfitters before us. How is that even possible?

Don't do it! Keep (and add to) your savings!

Seriously . . . if I had started saving and investing toward retirement when I was your age, I could easily have amassed between $150k and $200k. Oh, how I wish I had.

I know this comment isn't particularly entertaining . . . sorry. But consider this: I stand to gain absolutely *nothing* if you save your money. So perhaps the reason I implore you to save is that, as your friend, I honestly believe saving is in your best interest. I'm just saying.

But nobody could tell me anything at that age, and I suspect the wisdom of my experience may be lost on your youthful ears. And so it goes . . .

Um. Dave? How old are you anyway?

Older than Heather "Dooce" Armstrong, but younger than her husband, Jon.

Old enough to have seen "Star Wars" in the theater during its initial run.

Old enough to have worn bell-bottomed pants the first time they were in fashion.

Old enough to remember The Hostages (and when they came home) and the Miracle hockey game.

Old enough to remember why "Red Dawn" seemed relevant when it was released.

Old enough to have had both very excellent and extraordinarily crappy employers, to have gotten myself into and back out of debt (without bankruptcy, thank you very much), and to have figured out that some day I might want to get out of this damned rat race -- and that a few shiny trinkets today are not worth my financial freedom tomorrow.

I know y'all snicker and think I'm an old stick-in-the-mud, but there's a reason we tell the allegory of the ants and the grasshopper. :)

Incidentally those of us who wore bell-bottoms back in the day, to a person, regret it. And can't for the life of us understand their brief (although not brief enough) resurgence in popularity. I'm just saying.

Now, if you don't mind, I'm going to put on my "Frankie says relax" t-shirt while I listen to my "Quick Step and Side Kick" album, and watch Hannibal, Mad Murdock, B.A. and Faceman fire a lot of bullets without actually hitting anybody. Ever.

WOLVERINES!!!!!

Wow Dave. Wow.

Have you considered starting your own blog? You could change so. many. lives.

You'll notice she didn't say I could change so many lives . . . in a good way.
