Sarah: Open Letter

Dear Express,
Curse you for seducing me with your new selection and your email coupons. I hate how much I love you. I just can't quit you. You had me at hello, etc.
But this? Stirrup pants? I cannot abide these abominations, Express. Sure, leggings were one thing, but I still have nightmares about fourth grade and stirrup pants. How could you?!

But it looks like you have some cute new dresses, so I'll see you this weekend?

Always and forever,
Sarah

Did you see they also have a skort?

Hee. Yes. Wait, are they copying my entire fourth grade wardrobe? Because I don't know how they're going to get an oversized plaid County Seat t-shirt with matching scrunchie. Those are hard to come by.

Hee! Remember when your stirrup pants were getting too small (due either to machine washing and drying or a pesky growth spurt) and the tension on the stirrups would cause the waistband to creep ever-lower? Maybe you even adjusted your posture in order to wear them longer?

Hee. I think I just bent my knees a little bit. Remember how the stirrups were so cankle-inducing?

I remember thinking that stirrup pants were a hip-minimizing alternative to regular leggings. So wrong.

But on the other hand...can I go to Express with you?

Not meaning to mock you or anything but... how are they different around the hip area than regular leggings?
And yes. Please come with me.

Well, it depends on the type of stirrups. This really only applies to the heavier, more-pants-than-tights kind. Anyway, I think regular leggings follow the curve of your hips around the bottom side of your hip, while stirrups create a straight line from the hip to the ankle. Also, I guess the wider ankle area visually balances out the hip more, much like flare-leg jeans vs. skinny jeans.

don't hate me. but i will defend the stirrup. when one finds themselves often wearing skirts with boots, leggings are a necessity. especially in cold austrian winters. the problem with this scenario is, that regular footless leggings crawl up the boot, making extra and uncomfortable fabric creep up to your waste. and with a skirt, the extra fabric is unwelcome. stirrup foots allow for even distribution across the entire leg. oh, and since one wears boots, you never actually know they are stirrups. now if we're referring to this style...

then i cannot defend that. however, it wouldn't be so bad if some nice leg warmers were added to cover the look of the stirrup. again, this is all with a skirt. not a long baggy shirt.
